Training Institute for Mentally Challenged/Slow learners or Psychiatric Patients

A person with Intellectual disability (Mental Retardation) is one the most challenging of diseases in the field of mental health care. At Mind Management Institute we have decided to take the challenge and help patients to lead a fruitful, respectful life and share responsibilities with family leading to independent life. In this programme we provide both habilitation and rehabilitation for better community reintegration.

Aim:

Every person deserves the chance to utilize his or her full potential. Our aim is to help every individual to achieve it.

  • To assess each case of current functional status and formulate a feasible practical plan.
  • To improve their functional abilities and thereby enhance their quality of life.
  • To train them to deal with differential treatment and stigma.
  • To help family to accept the child’s disability and cope with it.
  • To help them to gain self-respect through activities at the centre and in society.
  • We believe that every person deserves the chance to utilize his or her full potential.
  • Every special parent has a question, “what next, and what after us.” Considering this problem in mind we have decided to start a college like programme for intellectually challenged, slow learners, mentally retarded or chronic psychiatric patients. We would the age of the person to be 15+ but less than 60 years of age.
  • Mentally Challenged persons are lacking in various gross or fine motor skills, mental abilities and social skills. They have their own personal problems like being unable to dress up independently, getting ready, packing their own things etc. But they also have some plus points that can be developed to their advantage and perhaps make them a meaningful member of the society.
  • This is also true of slow learners. They are slightly better and can be trained in educational, clerical or other such vocations. They could be meaningfully employed and also need to learn social skills.
  • Chronic mental illness causes regression and a loss of cognitive abilities in those persons. They need to be trained in physical, mental, social and many other skills to make their life better and happier.
  • It is difficult to integrate such people in normal people due to stigma and sometimes bullying. We are providing a non-judgmental, friendly environment for such persons.

This project is under direct supervision of Dr Jaideep Patil (MBBS MD Psychiatry). We have a dedicated staff to take care of patients physical and psychological needs. For medical issues we have visiting physicians.

We are mainly focusing on individualised therapy which will include a detailed assessment of the individual for current status and specific plan for improvement in problem areas. Along with that therapeutic group therapies, role play, music, play and art therapies. We take care that it should not be a burden and unpleasant for the patient.

The treating team consists of psychiatrists, clinical psychologist, physiotherapist, nurses and physicians to provide a holistic care treatment module. The psychiatrist provides medication that is absolutely necessary. The psychiatric medications will be given only if parents agree for such treatment.

All the staff is trained for neuro behavioural model therapies including cognitive behavioural therapy, psycho dynamic therapy and behavioural therapy, and will be under continuous supervision.

We do have hostel (residential) facility for those who wish to opt for it. Hostel is for those patients from other cities or due to other difficulties in transportation or who need it as a therapeutic need. The basic living facility varies from a single AC room to a shared room for three patients. We do have separate male and female sections with best possible security arrangements.

Taking into consideration their needs our team has planned activities for these beneficiaries

  • Personal assessment of their likes, dislikes, personal and professional skills, mental and physical and intellectual abilities.
  • Draft a plan for them according to their assessment report which will be determined in a way so as to increase the existing skills and teaching them additional skills and unlearning of wrong behaviours. Relearning more about normal things.
  • Your own contribution about problem areas in your ward will also be considered.
  • A 6-monthly evaluation of the changes that have occurred in your wards and feedback sessions
  • Future plans for his/her rehabilitation and employment
  • Minimal or no pampering
